Health Pools Begin to Open for Patients With Pre-Existing Conditions

Just a few months after enactment, the U.S. health reforms have already begun a key nationwide program to insure people with pre-existing medical conditions. BestWire reports that state by state, the $5 billion program – the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan — has either expanded existing high-risk pools or inserted the federal plan, depending on which avenue each state selected. The temporary pools are beginning to open for business, most of them accepting applications now, with the rest taking them soon. Twenty-one states chose to host the federal plans; the other states have their own plans.
