Colorado State University’s Tropical Meteorology Project has revised its prediction to four hurricanes this year, compared to 10 last season and a significant reduction from the university’s April forecast. The probability of a direct hit to the eastern United States stands at 22 percent, compared to the average of 31 percent. Supporting Colorado State's optimistic update of its hurricane forecast was an announcement by AccuWeather Global Weather Center, which predicted an El Niño would form in August and September as well as five to six hurricanes, of which two to four could be major.
