Agent to Agent: Educate Your Clients on the Importance of Safety in the Workplace

By Bob Mucci, VP
Wolpert Insurance

As an insurance agent, you obviously want to build your clientele. If you are offering business lines of insurance, workers compensation is probably one of your best-selling policies. For business owners, workers compensation is not an option; it’s required by both federal and state law. This is the first thing you should be telling your clients!

You should also remind business owners that it is important to enforce safety rules and regulations in their business. Of course, this is for their workers’ well-being and safety but this is also an important initiative for business owners to take if they want a lower premium. The more accidents and injuries in your workplace, the more claims made. The more claims made, the higher the premium. By explaining this to your clients, you could be saving them a ton of money, thus keeping them happy and loyal customers.

By offering money-saving advice, you will be building on your relationship with clients and even potential clients. Here are a few other pieces of advice you should pass along:

  • Consider looking into a safety seminar program. Employee seminars are not only educational, but may end up saving you money on your premium. Always ask about discounts for these types of safety precautions.
  • Establish an official training system for all incoming employees. As for current employees, refresher courses each year would not hurt.
  • Keep up with machinery maintenance to ensure that all tools and equipment are safe and working properly.
  • Supply protective equipment and gear to lower the risk of injury.
  • Make sure you properly classify your workers to avoid being overcharged.
  • Do your best to investigate injuries and accidents. Workers compensation fraud is a common issue and if you are not careful or attentive, your company may be taken advantage of. The more fraud claims, the higher your premium will be.
  • Consider looking into a return-to-work program. This program is designed to get employees back into the workplace as soon as possible, keeping employers in the loop during the recovery process.

Your clients are sure to appreciate your helpful advice and honesty. It is important to show your clients that you want to see them save whenever possible. They can use all the help and tips they can get; do not hesitate to step in and educate them!
