Bethesda, Grand Rapids, Pittsburgh Top ‘Safest Places’ List

The Farmers Insurance Group’s annual ranking of safest and most secure cities is out. Bethesda, Md., Grand Rapids, Mich., and Pittsburgh, Pa. have scored at the top of the list as the “Most Secure Places to Live in the U.S.” for large metropolitan areas (with a population of 500,000 or greater).

Among the criteria researchers at Sperling’s BestPlaces took into consideration was economic stability, crime statistics, extreme weather, risk of natural disasters, housing depreciation, foreclosures, life expectancy, motor vehicle fatalities and employment numbers.

This marks the seventh consecutive year of the Farmers Insurance study that the Bethesda area ranked in the top 20 of large metropolitan areas. In fact, it has earned a spot in the top 10 every year since 2007. This is the sixth consecutive year that Pittsburgh has been ranked in the Farmers Insurance list, while this year marks Grand Rapids first appearance in the top 20.

Rounding out the top 20 most secure large cities to live in according to the study are, in order:

Round Rock, Texas; Cambridge-Newton-Framingham, Mass.; Omaha, Neb.-Council Bluffs, Iowa; San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Calif.; San Francisco-San Mateo-Redwood City, Calif.; Portland-Beaverton, Ore.-Vancouver, Wash.; and Dallas-Plano-Irving, Texas.

Followed by: Boise City-Nampa, Idaho; Madison, Wisc.; Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, Minn.; Raleigh-Cary, N.C.; Portland-South Portland-Biddeford, Maine; Essex County, Mass.; El Paso, Texas; Honolulu, Hawaii; Santa Ana-Anaheim-Irvine, Calif.; and Des Moines-West Des Moines, Iowa.
