Insurance Commissioner: Few in N.C. Have Flood Insurance
October 4, 2018

In a guest article in the Fayetteville (NC) Observer, North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey writes, “Despite the fact that all homeowners’ policies include a disclaimer about damage from floods, many are surprised to learn that standard homeowners insurance does NOT cover damage from floods. The number of homeowners in North Carolina who have flood insurance is staggeringly low. Only about 134,000 homeowners have flood insurance in a state with more than 10 million people.”

Causey adds, “Once all the waters recede from Hurricane Florence and our insurance industry can take a breather from reviewing and paying claims from the storm, I plan to begin a statewide campaign to dispel the myths about flood insurance and encourage North Carolinians to consider buying it. I plan to work with insurance and real estate agents, as well as hold town hall meetings to accomplish this. Meanwhile, you can call your insurance agent now. He or she can provide you information on the National Flood Insurance Program.”
