Residents along a 300-mile stretch of the Gulf Coast from Mobile, Alabama, to the Florida Panhandle prepared for Hurricane Michael, which rapidly intensified from a tropical storm at mid-day Sunday to a Category 1 hurricane by mid-day Monday. Then, as of Wednesday morning, Michael was an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane bearing down on the Florida Panhandle.

As a Category 4 storm, Michael would be the most intense to make landfall on the panhandle in U.S. records back to 1851.
