Carriers support independent agency marketing effort

WASHINGTON – The National Association of Professional Insurance Agents (PIA) has kicked off a series of social media support efforts for PIA members across America. This support is provided to independent agents as part of the nearly ten year old PIA Branding Program (

This new social media effort has already begun and will include a series of webinars to help agents maximize their social media efforts; strategic and tactical guidance targeted specifically to independent insurance agencies; consumer-oriented articles and public service announcements for use in agency blogs, social media and newsletters; and guidance for agencies that want to create unique content for their social media sites.

“Six or seven years ago, social media was the next big thing,” said PIA National President Richard A. Clements. “That’s why back in 2010 we dedicated the inaugural PIA Agency Marketing Guide to helping PIA members understand how to successfully and safely use social media in their agencies. This new effort by PIA takes that to the next level, providing assistance based upon what is working at agencies across America.”

PIA has previously provided its members with social media support through the annual PIA Agency Marketing Guide, keeping agents abreast of new developments in social media and other areas of agency marketing. Most recently, PIA provided agents with social media assistance in the February 2015 issue of PIA Connection magazine which contained a special focus on this topic.

PIA’s new social media initiative began last October and has thus far included three webinars: “Taking Control of Social Media and the Smartphone,” “Developing Social Media Strategies for Your Agency for Bottom-Line Business Results,” and “Using LinkedIn and Twitter to Promote Your Agency.” A fourth webinar, “Accelerate Your Agency's Digital Marketing with YouTube and Visual Content Marketing,” will air later this spring. Presenters have included social media experts Tom Wetzel, Ted Janusz and Chris Paradiso. All of PIA’s webinars are available to PIA members online at

Other social media materials currently available to PIA members on the PIA Branding Program website include a Guide to Using LinkedIn penned for PIA by Ted Janusz, a guide to writing social media policies for an independent insurance agency, and archives of the February 2015 social media edition of PIA Connection magazine.

In addition to the social media support materials now being made available to PIA members, PIA makes a number of other marketing materials available through the PIA Branding Program. This includes an extensive series of print advertisements and radio commercials that are available in both English and Spanish for agencies to personalize and run in their local markets. This series includes ads that an agency can use for general branding purposes as well as ads targeted at auto insurance, homeowners insurance, commercial lines insurance and healthcare insurance.

“Social media is an increasingly important marketing tool for many independent insurance agents,” said Alexi Papandon, PIA’s senior vice president of products & services. “But it does require agents’ scarce time and contains potential pitfalls—in addition to having tremendous upsides—so PIA is happy to help our members use social media prudently and effectively.”

“I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the support that PIA members receive from our carrier sponsors,” Papandon added. “PIA’s Pinnacle Partners are highly regarded insurance companies that demonstrate their commitment to the independent agency distribution system and support the development of new marketing tools that PIA makes available to our members through the PIA Branding Program. PIA’s 2015 Pinnacle Partners are Bankers Insurance Group, Encompass Insurance, Erie Insurance, Harleysville Insurance, Progressive Insurance, State Auto Group, The Hartford, The Motorists Insurance Group and Wright Flood.”

Founded in 1931, PIA is a national trade association that represents member insurance agents and their employees who sell and service all kinds of insurance, but specialize in coverage of automobiles, homes and businesses. PIA members are Local Agents Serving Main Street AmericaSM. PIA's web address is
